Book-style boxes: spine print, magnet, and wrap family

Spine is a dimension

Give cavity depth. The spine follows grey board or MDF plus wrap. A fake thick spine on a shallow tray is a different box. Wenzhou Taishan Printing Co., Ltd. will not pad a 20 mm tray to look like a 50 mm coffee-table book without a new structure.

Closed outer height on a book-style set is tray walls plus cover wrap plus any magnet proudness. Designers often draw a spine wider than the cavity so the type looks heroic. That extra millimetres is either empty air (unstable) or extra board (a different quote).

Write inner L×W×H of the cavity, not only the closed book. If the set is a pair — two books in a slip or a magnetic pair — say so. Pair spines that must match in a photo need one sample program, not two separate colour calls.

Wrap families

Specialty paper, holographic film, printed brand wrap, and red presentation are catalog cases. Name the mill sheet if colour is contractual. Photos on this site are structure references, not SKUs.

Printed wrap still runs on Heidelberg 8-open, XL-75, or CDX102 after Kodak CTP, then lam, then wrap the core. Holographic and specialty sheets may skip CMYK or add foil. Spine print is a panel on that sheet: type, logo, and whether it reads when the book stands.

A red presentation wrap is a colour and paper call, not a structure. Do not assume every red book in the catalog shares a magnet count or a tray well.

MDF book-style

MDF book boxes are heavier. Do not copy a grey-board dieline onto 5 mm MDF without a new sample. Catalog MDF cores run 1.5–7 mm. Pick one thickness for the sample.

MDF changes hinge feel, magnet pocket method, and freight cube. It does not fold like a 1.5–3 mm grey-board collapsible gift box. If you need freight cube, you probably want grey board, not MDF — see the MDF versus grey-board article.

Wrap still prints on paper. Colour lives on the wrap sheet, not in the fibreboard. Foil and UV maps belong on the wrap, including the spine panel.

Magnet on the cover flap

Book-style magnets usually sit in the cover flap and the tray wall. Count, diameter, and hidden versus visible belong on the RFQ. We will not guess N52 from a competitor photo. See magnetic versus ribbon closures for the hardware rules.

A magnet that is too strong on a thin specialty wrap will telegraph. A magnet that is too weak lets the cover gape on shelf. Both are sample decisions. Ribbon on a book-style box is usually a pull or a wrap, not a substitute for saying “no magnet.”

Spine print and converting

Since 2000 this Longgang plant has wrapped book-style rigid boxes with die-cut boards, lam, and magnet insert. Spine type must survive wrap stretch around the board edge. Fine type too close to the fold will move. Put critical type inboard and confirm on the printed sample, not only on a PDF.

If the spine is unprinted kraft or cloth-look paper, say so. An unprinted spine with a printed cover is two wrap calls, not one “make it look like a book” sentence.

Inserts in the tray

EVA or paper trays sit in the book cavity. They must not hold the cover open or hide the magnet. Send the product or millimetres. Flocked wrap on the tray is a surface unless you add a well.

Lid-and-base is a different family. Do not paste a book-style spine spec onto a heaven-and-earth RFQ and expect the same close.

What to put on the RFQ

Spine width intent, print on spine yes/no, magnet yes/no, inner cavity, wrap family, pair or single, core grey board or MDF with one caliper. We do not publish MOQ, prices, or guaranteed days here. Confirm on sample and RFQ.

If you only have a retail photo, say so. We will propose a close structure, not clone unknown tooling.
