Magnetic closures versus ribbon closures on gift boxes

Magnets

Name count, position, and whether the flap is a book cover or a lid. Hidden magnets need wrap that will not telegraph. Wenzhou Taishan Printing Co., Ltd. will not guess N52 versus a shop magnet, grade, or diameter from a retail photo.

A book-style cover magnet sits in a pocket or a routed well under the wrap. A lid-and-base magnet, when used at all, is a different geometry: two plates that must meet when the lid is fully home. Mixing those two sentences on one RFQ line produces a sample that closes on the wrong face.

Magnet size also moves wrap tension. A large disc under thin specialty paper can show as a ring. If the wrap must stay clean, say so, and we will propose a pocket and wrap caliper on the structure sample — not as a published guarantee, only as a converting note to confirm.

• Count of magnets per box (one, two, or a pair of plates).
• Face: book cover, lid wall, or base wall.
• Hidden versus visible hardware.
• Wrap mill sheet if telegraph is a reject item.

Ribbons and handles

Open ribbon, closed ribbon, triangle-handle, and ribbon-handle totes are catalog structure families. Specify ribbon width and whether it is load-bearing. Photos on this site are structure references, not stock SKUs.

A ribbon that only ties a lid is converting: width, colour, and whether the ends are glued, knotted, or left free. A ribbon that is also a handle is a load path. Those two jobs do not share a unit price or a single die.

Folding gift boxes in this plant typically use 1.5–3 mm grey board. A decorative satin on that wrap will not carry glass unless you say the kilograms and we reinforce the attachment. Confirm attachment (glued tab, wrap-through, or hardware eye) on the sample.

• Open tie, closed loop, triangle die-cut, or ribbon tote handle.
• Width and whether the ribbon carries weight.
• Colour match: mill ribbon versus printed wrap.

One closure per RFQ unless you pay for two samples

A magnet book and a ribbon folding tote are two quotes. Do not put both on one line and expect one unit price. Tooling, wrap, and pack method all change.

Buyers sometimes write “magnetic ribbon box” because a competitor’s listing used that nickname. On the floor in Longgang, that sentence is two programs. We will ask which structure family you actually want before Kodak CTP and die-cut start.

If you truly need both — a book-style magnet plus a presentation ribbon that is not load-bearing — say so as two lines on the same RFQ. We can quote two samples. We will not collapse them into one mystery SKU.

Book-style flap versus lid-and-base

Book-style boxes close like a book: spine on one edge, flap on the opposite edge, cavity in the tray. The magnet usually lives in the flap and the tray wall. Ribbon, if used, is often a pull or a wrap-around, not the primary latch.

Lid-and-base (heaven-and-earth) boxes close by friction and lid wall height. A ribbon on a lid-and-base is usually decoration or a lift tab. Putting a book magnet spec on a lid-and-base RFQ without a new dieline is how samples come back that will not sit on shelf.

Wrap telegraph and converting

Wrap print still runs on Heidelberg 8-open, XL-75, or CDX102 after Kodak CTP. Magnets and ribbons are after print and after lamination. Foil and spot UV sit on the wrap sheet; they do not hide a magnet ring if the paper is thin.

If the brand needs a dead-flat cover, we may recommend a slightly heavier wrap or a different pocket. That is a sample decision. Do not treat a catalog photo of a clean cover as a promise that every mill sheet will hide every disc.

Load path versus decoration

Ask one question on the RFQ: does a person lift the pack by this closure? If yes, you are specifying a handle program — see the ribbon-and-handle folding carrier notes — not a gift-box latch.

If no, the ribbon or magnet is presentation. Then the failure mode is open-in-transit or ugly telegraph, not a broken handle. Those two failure modes need different tests on the sample you approve.

What Taishan needs on the sample brief

Since 2000 this Longgang plant has converted rigid gift boxes with die-cut, lam, and folder-gluer on the folding lines, and hand-wrap / magnet insert on the rigid lines. We still need your cavity millimetres, closure type, and wrap family before we cut.
