Lid-and-base fit: snug, loose, and two-tone lids

Say how it should feel

Snug, finger-loose, or extra-loose for tissue. A photo of a closed box does not encode friction. Wenzhou Taishan Printing Co., Ltd. sets lid gap from the words on your RFQ plus the wrap caliper on the sample, not from a lifestyle still.

Snug means the lid needs a deliberate pull. Finger-loose means you can run a finger along the wall. Extra-loose is for tissue, foam, or a liner that will be added later — if you forget to say the liner, production will look “too loose” next to the empty sample.

Fit is a converting result: board caliper, wrap thickness, glue, and lid-wall height. Heaven-and-earth (lid-and-base) boxes close by those four, not by a magnet unless you add one as a separate spec.

• Snug, finger-loose, or extra-loose — pick one.
• Whether tissue or a liner will be added after packing.
• Lid wall height if the lid must sit proud or flush.

Two-tone lids

If lid wrap and base wrap differ, send both mill sheets. Registration of the join is a converting note, not a CMYK surprise. Two-tone catalog cases on this site are structure references, not SKUs.

The lid wrap turns under the lid wall. If the lid is navy and the base is kraft, the under-turn can flash the wrong colour at the mouth. Say whether that flash is allowed. Printed wraps still run on Heidelberg 8-open, XL-75, or CDX102 after Kodak CTP; two sheets mean two plates and two colour calls.

A two-tone join on the lid face itself — a split graphic — is a different knife and wrap sequence. Do not describe a split lid with the same sentence as a navy-lid kraft-base set.

MDF lid-and-base

1.5–7 mm MDF cores change lid weight. A grey-board snug fit will not translate. Sample the core you will buy. Catalog MDF is for lid stiffness, not for copying a 1.5–3 mm folding-gift-box feel.

A heavy MDF lid can slam or sit open depending on hinge and wall. There is no furniture hinge on a wrapped MDF heaven-and-earth box unless you specify hardware. Fit is still friction plus wall height.

Do not mix MDF lid and grey-board base on one RFQ line unless you want a special and a new sample. Weight mismatch is a feel problem, not a colour problem.

Wrap caliper and lid wall

Thick specialty paper plus grey board plus lam adds tenths of a millimetre all around the mouth. That is enough to turn a finger-loose sample into a fight. If colour is contractual, freeze the mill sheet before you freeze “snug.”

Foil and spot UV live on the wrap; they can add local thickness at the mouth if the finish wraps over the edge. Put finishes on the finish map and call out the mouth if it is a reject item.

Lined and flocked interiors

Lined and flocked catalog boxes change interior friction and sometimes mouth thickness. They do not replace the need to say snug or loose. Flock is a wrap surface, not an insert, unless you add a well — see EVA versus paper tray.

If the liner is a separate tray, the lid must clear the tray wall. Measure stack height. A beautiful flocked empty base with a later EVA block is how lids stop closing in production.

Humidity and grey-board movement

Grey board moves with humidity. A snug fit packed in Longgang in wet season can feel different after a dry warehouse. We do not publish a guaranteed millimetre gap. We sample, you approve, and destination climate belongs on the RFQ as context, not as a warranty.

Since 2000 this plant has converted lid-and-base rigid boxes with die-cut, lam, and wrap. Export packing still matters: a crushed corner on the lid wall changes fit more than a debate about 0.1 mm on email.

Sample the fit, do not photograph it

Send inner and outer millimetres labelled as such. Say how the lid should feel. Approve a physical sample with the wrap and core you will buy. Folding rigid gift boxes that collapse for freight are a different family — they do not share this lid-wall geometry.
