When to specify MDF cores instead of grey board

Weight and lid slam

If the lid must feel like wood furniture, MDF is the catalog path. If it must fold for freight, grey board is the path. Wenzhou Taishan Printing Co., Ltd. will not put a 5 mm MDF lid on a collapsible folding-gift program and still call it cube-saving.

Grey-board folding gift boxes in this plant typically run 1.5–3 mm cores, wrapped, scored, and folded. Lid-and-base and book-style grey board stay assembled and present on shelf. MDF sits with those assembled families when you want more mass in the lid and walls.

Lid slam is a feel, not a published joule rating. Sample the thickness you will buy. A 1.5 mm MDF lid and a 7 mm MDF lid are different quotes and different freight.

• Furniture-like lid: MDF path.
• Fold-flat freight: grey-board collapsible path.
• Assembled grey-board lid-and-base if you need rigid without MDF mass.

Caliper band

Write 1.5–7 mm only if you mean the catalog band. Pick one thickness for the sample. Do not write “MDF or grey, you choose.” That sentence is two factory paths and two samples.

Grey-board caliper for folding gift boxes is a different band (typically 1.5–3 mm here). Copying “2 mm” from an MDF sentence onto a folding wrap without saying the material is how samples come back in the wrong family.

Wrap still prints on Heidelberg

MDF is the core. The wrap sheet is still offset + finish. Colour lives on paper, not on the fibreboard. Print runs on Heidelberg 8-open, XL-75, or CDX102 after Kodak CTP when the wrap is printed, then lam, then wrap.

Foil, UV, and specialty paper maps do not change because the core is MDF. They can fail differently at edges because MDF corners are sharper or heavier. Confirm wrap at the corner on the sample.

Unwrapped raw MDF is not a catalog gift-box finish unless you specify it as a special. Most programs wrap all visible faces.

Factory path difference

Since 2000 this Longgang plant has converted both grey-board rigid and MDF-core gift boxes. Grey board is scored and, on collapsible lines, folded on folder-gluer. MDF is cut, often routed for magnets, and wrapped as a stay-up core. Sharing a dieline across those paths without a new sample is a common RFQ error.

Folding versus stay-up

If the brief is freight cube first, start with collapsible grey board, including 七菱板 seven-panel when the shape is heptagon. MDF does not collapse like that wrap.

If the brief is a heavy lid on a counter that must not flutter, start with MDF or a thicker assembled grey-board lid-and-base, then sample. Do not solve flutter by writing a magnet into an MDF RFQ without saying magnet size — hardware is extra.

Book-style and lid-and-base

Both families exist in grey board and in MDF in the catalog. Book-style MDF makes a heavier book and a different hinge. Lid-and-base MDF makes a heavier heaven-and-earth close. Two-tone wraps and flocked interiors still apply as wrap specs, not as core specs.

Drawer boxes and folding totes are usually grey-board or carton stories. Do not paste MDF into a ribbon-handle tote RFQ unless you want a special that will not fold.

Sample the core you buy

Name MDF or grey board, one millimetre value, box family, wrap mill sheet, magnet or not, destination. We do not publish MOQ, prices, or guaranteed days here. Quantity band and clock belong on the RFQ.

Approve a physical sample in the core you will purchase. A grey-board sales sample is not an MDF production path. Confirm on sample.
