Folding rigid versus lid-and-base versus MDF — pick the structure first

Folding rigid

Wrapped grey-board cores, typically 1.5–3 mm, fold for outbound freight. Cyan, orange, navy, black, and white palettes on this site are structure references, not SKUs. Good for brand colour, foil, and UV on a wrap printed in-house on Heidelberg sheetfed.

Collapsible rigid is still a gift box. It is not an SBS sleeve. Fold-flat is a pack method for the container, not a courier drop-test claim. If units will mail as-is, say so on the RFQ — you may need corrugated instead. See the freight-cube article on this site.

• Grey-board core in the catalog range 1.5–3 mm.
• Wrap printed or specialty; foil and UV on the sheet, not as a JPEG filter.
• Say if the box must stay folded in the export carton.
• Inner L×W×H labelled inner — fold-flat does not skip millimetres.

Lid-and-base, book-style, drawer, double-door

Heaven-and-earth lifts off. Book-style opens on a spine. A drawer slides in a sleeve. Double-doors hinge. They present on shelf and usually cube more than a collapsible wrap. Lid inner and base inner, or sleeve inner and drawer outer, must be labelled, or fit will miss.

Book-style needs cavity, spine, and whether a magnet is required. Drawers need travel and layer count — see the drawer article. Portfolio photos are structure references, not locked SKUs.

MDF cores

Catalog MDF cores run 1.5–7 mm. Use them when lid stiffness and weight matter more than cube. They are not interchangeable with grey board on the same dieline without a new sample.

MDF is a separate line on the RFQ. Mixing “rigid” as a nickname for both grey board and MDF is how quoting stalls. Confirm millimetres and family. Quantity bands differ by converting path; this site does not publish a stock minimum.

Freight cube versus shelf presence

Freight follows the structure choice, not the wrap colour. A collapsible grey-board gift box ships flatter than a glued lid-and-base. Book-style and MDF usually ship assembled. Corner protection and export carton belong on the packing RFQ, not as an afterthought.

Heptagon and handle totes do not always collapse as flat as a four-sided wrap. Ask on the quote. Odd panels are steel first, cube second.

• Collapsible wrap: cube saving is the usual reason to pick it.
• Lid-and-base / book-style: shelf and unboxing, more cube.
• MDF: stiffness and weight ahead of cube.

What you actually audit

Pick the family from the audit, not from wrap colour. Photographed cyan or kraft on this site is not a warehouse SKU.

• Container cube first: collapsible grey-board wrap (catalog 1.5–3 mm). Fold-flat is pack method, not a mailer claim.
• Unboxing and lid feel: lid-and-base. Write snug / finger-loose / extra-loose.
• Spine on shelf: book-style. Cavity millimetres, not only closed-book outer.
• Pull-out well: drawer. Sleeve inner + drawer outer + travel.
• Two leaves: double-door. Catch and opening clearance.
• Stiffness and weight ahead of cube: MDF 1.5–7 mm (catalog). New sample if you swap from grey board.

What fails if the family is wrong

Do not pick MDF because a photo looks “premium”. Premium here is a finish map on a named core. Closures and inserts follow the family: magnet, ribbon, tuck; EVA, paper tray, flock — each its own line.

• SBS sleeve written as folding gift: wrong knife and glue.
• Drawer written as lid-and-base: scrape or missing second layer.
• Heptagon or handle tote assumed as flat as a four-panel wrap: cube and steel both miss.
• Unit mailed as-is on a collapsible wrap: say so — you may need corrugated.
