Folding rigid versus lid-and-base versus MDF — pick the structure first

Collapsible grey-board boxes ship flatter. Lid-and-base and MDF cores present better and cube more. Freight follows the choice.

Folding rigid

Wrapped grey-board cores, typically 1.5–3 mm, fold for outbound freight. Cyan, orange, navy, black, and white palettes on this site are structure references, not SKUs. Good for brand colour, foil, and UV on a wrap printed in-house on Heidelberg sheetfed.

Collapsible rigid is still a gift box. It is not an SBS sleeve. Fold-flat is a pack method for the container, not a courier drop-test claim. If units will mail as-is, say so on the RFQ — you may need corrugated instead. See the freight-cube article on this site.

Lid-and-base and book-style

Heaven-and-earth and book-style boxes present on shelf. Magnetic or ribbon closures belong on the RFQ. They cube more in the container than a collapsible wrap. Lid inner and base inner must both be labelled, or fit will miss.

Book-style needs cavity, spine, and whether a magnet is required. The closed-book outer is not the tray the product sits in. Portfolio photos of book boxes are structure references, not locked SKUs.

MDF cores

Catalog MDF cores run 1.5–7 mm. Use them when lid stiffness and weight matter more than cube. They are not interchangeable with grey board on the same dieline without a new sample.

MDF is a separate line on the RFQ. Mixing “rigid” as a nickname for both grey board and MDF is how quoting stalls. Confirm millimetres and family. Quantity conversations differ — see the MOQ article; this site does not publish a stock minimum.

Freight cube versus shelf presence

Freight follows the structure choice, not the wrap colour. A collapsible grey-board gift box ships flatter than a glued lid-and-base. Book-style and MDF usually ship assembled. Corner protection and export carton belong on the packing RFQ, not as an afterthought.

Heptagon and handle totes do not always collapse as flat as a four-sided wrap. Ask on the quote. Odd panels are steel first, cube second.

Collapsible wrap: cube saving is the usual reason to pick it.

MDF: stiffness and weight ahead of cube.

Closures and inserts follow the family

Magnet versus ribbon versus tuck is a closure, not a decoration nickname. Book-style usually needs magnet size and spine print. Ribbon-handle carriers need handle type on the RFQ. Inserts — EVA, paper tray, flocked wrap — are separate jobs inside the cavity.

Do not pick MDF because the wrap looks “premium” on a photo. Premium on this plant is a finish map on a named core. Foil and UV sit on the wrap sheet after Heidelberg print, the same whether the core is grey board or MDF — the core still has to be named.

Color palettes are not SKUs

Photographed cyan, orange, navy, kraft, or black wraps describe a structure family on taishanprint.com. They are not warehouse items and not Pantone contracts. If brand colour matters, send a coated target or ask for a Heidelberg sheet.

The plant lists 20,000+ m² production, 3,500 m² warehouse, 200+ staff, and 50+ machines, including Kodak CTP and Heidelberg 8-open, XL-75, and CDX102. That capacity still quotes a structure, not a colour name from a gallery.

How to choose on the RFQ
