Why collapsible rigid boxes change the freight cube

A wrapped grey-board gift box that folds is still a gift box. It is not an SBS sleeve. It does ship flatter than a glued lid-and-base. Ask the quote how it packs — do not invent a container count from a photo.

Fold for the container, not for the courier drop test

Collapsible wrap is a factory pack method. If the buyer will mail units as-is, say so — you may need corrugated instead. Wenzhou Taishan Printing Co., Ltd. will not treat a folded grey-board gift box as a courier mailer because it saves cube on the ocean leg.

Folding gift boxes in this plant typically use 1.5–3 mm grey board, wrapped, then folded for outbound cartons. The shopper or the brand’s warehouse erects them. That is a labour and instruction choice on the destination side, not a free upgrade to mailer strength.

Photos on this site are structure references, not SKUs. A flat pack in a catalog shot does not encode drop-test performance. If the unit must survive a last-mile drop, write corrugated or an outer mailer on the RFQ.

  • Ocean cube versus last-mile drop — pick the job.
  • Who erects the box: factory, brand DC, or shop.
  • Gift wrap versus mailer family.

Heptagon and handle totes

Odd panels and handles do not always collapse as flat as a four-sided wrap. Ask on the quote. 七菱板 seven-panel collapsible rigid is still a gift box, but seven corners and a possible insert change the folded stack height.

Ribbon-handle and triangle-handle totes add bulk at the handle web or the ribbon. Forcing them as flat as a plain folding lid can kink the handle. That is a packing note, not a wrap-colour note.

If the tote must ship erected because the handle will not fold cleanly, cube looks more like an assembled rigid. Confirm pack method on the sample carton, not in an email guess.

Assembled rigid

Lid-and-base, book-style, and MDF usually ship assembled. Cube and corner protection belong on the packing article. Catalog MDF cores run 1.5–7 mm and do not fold like grey-board collapsible wraps.

A glued heaven-and-earth box occupies tray footprint times height in the export carton. Corner protectors and inner cartons add more cube. Do not compare that number in your head to a folded wrap and call both “rigid gift box” on one freight spreadsheet without two pack methods.

Book-style magnets and spines also ship as formed books unless you have a special collapsible book program — we will not assume that from a photo.

Grey-board fold path in Longgang

Since 2000 this plant has converted collapsible rigid gift boxes with Heidelberg wrap print (8-open, XL-75, CDX102), Kodak CTP, die-cut, lam, and folder-gluer. Fold scores must survive the wrap and the stack in the export carton.

Too aggressive a fold on thick wrap cracks the print. Too shy a fold and the box will not lie flat, so you lose the cube you bought the structure for. That balance is a sample of the packed carton, not only of one pretty unit.

Export carton packing

Folded units still need a carton count, pad, and a way to stop scores from taking a set that will not erect. We do not publish a guaranteed units-per-carton or a container TEU count here. Those numbers come from the size you approve and the packing method on the RFQ.

Destination humidity and how long the pack sits folded can change erect feel. Mention destination as context. It is not a warranty of cube.

When not to collapse

If the insert is a deep EVA well that must ship in the box, collapsing may crush the well or force a separate insert carton — two cubes, not one. If retail staff will not erect boxes, assembled rigid may cost more freight and less labour. Write the labour assumption.

Special-shape fans, stars, and tubes are not “collapsible rigid” just because they are gift boxes. Heptagon is seven-panel collapsible when tooled that way; a round tube is not.

Ask the quote for pack method

Structure family first: collapsible grey-board, heptagon, handle tote, lid-and-base, book-style, or MDF. Then pack: folded, erected, with or without insert. Then quantity band and destination. We do not publish MOQ, prices, or guaranteed days on this site.

Confirm on a packed sample or a packing photo of the carton we actually use for your size. A catalog still of a folded wrap is not a freight invoice.

  • Folded versus erected on the ocean.
  • Insert in box or packed aside.
  • Handle or seven-panel exceptions.
  • Export carton method — see packing article.

Put this on the RFQ

Catalog ranges only. Confirm on sample. Do not invent certificate numbers or a stock SKU from a photo.

  • Say if the program must ship flat.
  • Inner size after the box is erected.
  • Do not mix MDF stay-up boxes with collapsible rigid in one cube estimate.

Catalog ranges only. Confirm on sample, board lot, and destination spec. Certificate numbers are not invented here — request current scans on the RFQ.
